The Current transformer and the potential transformer both are the measuring instrument transformer. These are the very useful measuring instruments which is used to measure the high current and high voltage in electrical system.

Generally Ameter and voltmeter are use to measure the value of current and voltage in electric system. But Ameter and voltmeter are not able to measuring high current and high voltage due to Ameter and voltmeter are not available in higher rating.
To make the very high rating Ameter and voltmeter are very difficult. So when need to measure high current and high voltage then we use CT and PT.
CT and PT are instrument transform. So CT and PT are only used in AC alternating current supply.
